It includes the food and beverage list that we have been forging and resources for businesses and individuals that are needed at this time, including unemployment, SBA loans, tips for servers, and many other services. All this in one place. Winston-Salem Strong!
  • Food holidays and history.

Don’t forget our sponsors:

Carrabba’s Italian Grill Healthy, grilled meats, wood-fired pizzas, fresh ingredients, and phenomenal wine dinners. That’s just some of the offerings of Carrabba’s. And, Daniel Butner, the local proprietario, is salt of the earth and a pillar of good in the community. Go taste the goodness that is Carrabba’s and see why Tim and Ray are always talking it up!

Washington Perk & Provision Company. Better than a convenience store but not quite a grocery store, in the heart of Washington Park and Downtown WSNC.

Anonymous Donor Feeds 100 at Bethesda Center

Grecian Corner posted on their Facebook page yesterday that an anonymous donor paid to feed 100 homeless citizens at the Bethesda Center in Industry Hill. That’s 100 people fed and a local food staple that was supported. I love this town!

Here is the post from Angelo:

Good morning Facebook Friends. I’d like to share with you something that touched my heart last night. Last night an anonymous donor hired us to feed 100 homeless people at the Bethesda Center. That’s right…100 people. This person has a heart of gold. They not only supported my business, but more importantly they supported those who are less fortunate. I want to thank this person, and you know who you are, from the bottom (of) my heart. You are a God-send. You and your family are making a difference in our community! -Angelo

West End Cafe Update

From West End Café:

Good afternoon everyone!

By now you all must be aware of Mayor Allen Joines “Stay At Home Order” issued yesterday which takes effect Friday, March 27th at 5:00 pm. In consideration of this order, and out of concern for the health and safety of our staff and customers, West End Cafe will cease offering to go orders effective Friday, March 27th at 5:00 pm, or when we run out food, whichever comes first. We will reopen upon the expiration of this order on April 16th.

Although Mayor Joines’ order allows us to remain open for to-go orders by following the strict guidelines in the order, we feel that just because we can doesn’t mean we should. To remain open would seem to run contrary to the purpose and intent of the order and the need to “flatten the curve” of the spread of the COVID19 Virus. We do not make this decision lightly. We are ceasing operations out of an abundance of caution for our staff and our customers who have been so wonderful and loyal since the late Rob Shay opened the Cafe in 1980. Throughout this time, we have repeatedly asked ourselves “What would Rob do?” We have no doubt that Rob would put the health and safety of customers and staff first, and would close our doors until the order is lifted.

Upon the expiration of this order, West End Cafe will reopen and will be offering a BRAND NEW DINNER MENU and an updated wine list. We hope that you will all join us then to jump-start a new era of great food and service at West End Cafe. Until then, stay put, stay safe, wash your hands, and don’t forget about us, or the rest of the service and hospitality businesses that have been so adversely affected by this virus.

We would also like to express our immense gratitude for our patrons who have supported us during this trying time. Your warmth and generosity have given us a newfound faith in humanity. We simply cannot thank you enough, and we hope to see you all soon!

I have every reason to believe that when we reach the “other side” that we will have an even-better West End Café which is saying something because they are pretty awesome, to begin with. When I have info, I will pass it along!

Carrabba’s Feeds WSNC’s First Responders and WSFCS Employees

Daniel Butner prepares to serve 130 cafeteria and bus drivers for WSFCS

Daniel Butner, the proprietario of the Winston-Salem Carrabba’s Italian Grill has, once again, shown his big heart and has prepared food for and fed the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Communications Division and Records Division, served five Winston-Salem Fire Department Stations, and has fed cafeteria workers and bus drivers that are continuing to serve food to those who are in need from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system.

Daniel Butner is a man with much love for this community, and the residents and workers from this city and county are thankful to him, his staff and to Carrabba’s Italian Grill. When asked about these feats, he shrugs and says, “I’m only doing what everyone should strive to do. It’s just not everyone can. I can. And, I will.”

Mozelle’s Presents “Mozelle’s At Your Table”

In this “Now Normal” where restaurants are having to be innovative and try different avenues of creativity, Mozelle’s and Chef Jay Pierce are presenting “Mozelle’s At Your Table.” (336)703-5400. Here is the email that was sent:

Dear Mozelle’s Friends + Family,

You usually receive this email when a wine dinner is on the horizon, but these are not normal times. as we continue to provide our comfort food for take out, curbside pick-up and delivery, we are observing up-to-date safety guidelines because we care about the health and safety of our staff and our community at-large. we are now set up for online ordering directly on our website. We also offer delivery via DoorDash food delivery and soon with UberEats. whenever possible, please use our own website, which results in more of your dollars staying in our community.

We have heard that there is a lot of confusion about the City of Winston-Salem’s “stay at home” order that goes into effect this Friday, March 27. Restaurants that provide to-go meals (as well as grocery stores and pharmacies) are deemed essential businesses and are therefore exempt from the order. We will be here preparing your favorites and we hope that you will allow us to provide a little comfort (food) in such an uncertain time.

By way of burying the lede, as some of you know, we had a wine dinner scheduled Wednesday, April 1. Due to the circumstances, we are unable to have it here, so how about we do to at your house?

All of North Carolina Under “Stay-at-Home” Order, Takeout STILL Okay

Gov. Roy Cooper (©CharlotteFive)

As with Mayor Joines’ declaration earlier this week, the entire state of North Carolina is now on a “Stay-at-Home” order from Governor Roy Cooper. Also, as with Mayor Joines’ declaration, you are still allowed to go to the grocery store, order takeout, pickup takeout/curbside/delivery, you can go to the office supply stores and so on. This is not a reason to panic. Actually, very little is different about this than there was before. There is no reason for documentation to prove that you’re either doing something “essential” or work for an “essential” service/business. Stay calm. Don’t hoard everyday items like toilet paper/paper towels/hand sanitizer/sanitizing wipes and so on. We can get these things in stores if people stop hoarding!

Here, in section 19, Governor Cooper’s order lists:

19. Restaurants for consumption off-premises. Restaurants and other facilities that prepare and serve food, but only for consumption off-premises, through such means as in-house delivery, third-party delivery, drive-through, curbside pick-up, and carry-out. Schools and other entities that provide free food services to students or members of the public may continue to do so under this Executive Order when the food is provided for carry-out, drive-through or delivery. This Executive Order is consistent with and does not amend or supersede prior COVID-19 related Executive Orders restricting the operations of restaurants and temporarily closing bars.

A Delicious by Shereen Update

©Shereen Gomaa

I had a short email conversation with Shereen Gomaa from Delicious by Shereen about her operations. Here is what she said:

We’ve had challenges in finding adequate supplies (we had to drive to Greensboro just to find chicken and there is almost no rice in the market) – we’re going to hold off on any delivery orders for the time being so that we can ensure we continue to provide the quality (and quantity) that people have come to expect from Delicious.

We will plan on continuing normal catering operations once the situation improves and may consider centralized pickup, and are working on revamping our business model to accommodate delivery orders in the future.

When the crisis is over and things get back to business, you can contact her by sending an email to info@deliciousbyshereen and visiting her website or her Facebook page. Check back often to see if her status has changed and you can also follow The Man Who Ate the Town status list.

Winston-Salem Mayor Orders “Stay-At-Home.” Takeout Still Available.

Mayor of Winston-Salem, Allen Joines has issued a “Stay-At-Home” alert for all non-essential businesses and employees starting on Friday, March 27.

The good news, however, is that restaurants and hospitality businesses that offer takeout/delivery/curbside are exempt from the alert. Per the proclamation:

12. Restaurants for consumption off-premises. Restaurants and other facilities that prepare and serve food, but only for consumption off-premises, through such means as in-house delivery, third-party delivery, drive-through, curbside pick-up, and carry-out. Schools and other entities that typically provide food services to students or members of the public may continue to do so under this Amended Declaration on the condition that the food is provided to students or members of the public on a pick-up and takeaway basis only. Schools and other entities that provide food
services under this exemption shall not permit the food to be eaten at the site where
it is provided, or at any other gathering site due to the virus’s propensity to
physically impact surfaces and personal property.

Note the last sentence… you are NOT allowed to eat the food at the site where it is provided.

So, the hospitality industry in WSNC can continue as it has. I directly spoke with Mayor Joines and asked if this did, in fact, mean the restaurants could stay open. He said:  “Yes it excludes restaurants with takeout. And, makes it ok for people to go out and get the food.”

Worry not, WSNC! You can still get your favorite takeout, provided the restaurant is serving at this time.
